Residents of Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, were
terrified after a 26-year-old woman, Ugochukwu Nworie, was allegedly raped to
death.
According to reports, the incident occurred
on Monday at the Hope-in Hotel in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
It was discovered that the victim arrived
at the hotel late Monday night with a group of young men.
The lady was discovered dead in the room
after the door was opened on Tuesday morning, with her legs, hands, and mouth
tied up, according to sources.
On Thursday, the Ebonyi State Police
Command confirmed the incident.
Mrs. Loveth Odah, the state Police Public
Relations Officer, said the Divisional Police Officer of the Kpirikpiri Police
Division in the Abakaliki metropolis confirmed the incident took place at the
Hope-in Hotel in Abakaliki.
"The DPO reported that the incident
occurred while on a routine check on the hotel," Odah said. "An
unaccounted-for room was discovered. So the DPO asked the receptionist, who
informed him that the guests in the room were strangers to him.
"Attempts to open the room proved
futile until he requested a spare key, only to discover the lady's lifeless
body, naked with her legs, hands, and mouth tied to the room's bed."
The state Commissioner of Police, Aliyu
Garba, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, according to the
police spokesperson.
She revealed that efforts were underway to
apprehend and prosecute the criminals as a deterrent to others.
"The lady was gang-raped, according to
preliminary investigation, as more than 12 used condoms were discovered in the
room.
"The investigation is still ongoing,
and we will keep the media and the public updated as more details emerge,"
she added.
She stated that the body had been taken to
a morgue.
